Desserts That WOW…No Fuss with All the Frills

Like the changing seasons of the year, our tastes in desserts vary from hearty pumpkin pie or apple crisp in fall and winter to refreshing strawberry short cake or lemon torte in spring and summer. Desserts can be rich and gooey, light and flaky or any combination in between. Selecting an appropriate dessert to cap off a special meal is important and Taste of Home Cooking School Made Easy knows home cooks are always looking for impressive desserts to dazzle their guests.

Join Dana Cook from the cooking school staff on April 11, 2007 as she prepares a variety of rapid ready dishes which include 2 incredible desserts. The program will be sponsored by WTCJ-FM, WLME and Southern Indiana Resource Solutions (SIRS) at the Ferdinand Community Center with an emphasis on dishes that have “from-scratch” taste without a lot of bother. If you have never tried a Napoleon style dessert because of the time and effort needed to make the puffed pastry, you will want to attend this cooking school and watch Ms Cook prepare “Strawberry Napoleons”.

Napoleons are typically desserts made from layers of puff pasty spread with a vanilla pastry cream named for the French emperor Bonaparte. Legend has it that the emperor was defeated at Waterloo as a result of an overindulgence of his now famous namesake dessert. Whatever the tale, Napoleons are treats to be savored.

The second dessert recipe will feature ice cream sandwiches. “I know you are thinking this must be a misprint,” exclaims Sandy Bloom, executive director of the cooking schools. I couldn’t believe my staff when they told me they were making an “Ice Cream Sandwich Cake.” I was truly surprised at the flavor and the wonderful presentation when served on a plate. This recipe is definitely a fast-to-fix-treat, but oh so good, especially for the warm weather months.”

The evening presentation is being sponsored by WTCJ-FM, WLME and SIRS as a fundraiser for SIRS. All ticket proceeds will go to benefit SIRS Adult and Children Services Programs. They invite you to visit various local vendors’ booths before the demonstration begins. Everyone will receive a gift bag, as they enter the auditorium, filled with coupons, handouts and a Taste of Home Cooking School Quick Cooking magazine. This special cookbook features the recipes prepared on stage plus many more delicious meal solutions. Several lucky attendees will have the opportunity to taste a small sample of some of the featured dishes.

There will also be opportunities to win special door prizes. Taste of Home Cooking School is pleased to have the new Taste of Home Cookbook available to award to 3 lucky winners. “Taste of Home is about great food and real people who take pride in what they cook and have fun doing it,” said Ms. Cook. “People treasure Taste of Home recipes, but they value equally the connection they feel with other cooks just like themselves who want their families leaving the table full, happy and raving about their meals now and for generation to come.” The Taste of Home Cookbook is an everything-you-need durable reference book. This is one book you will want to add to your library of cookbooks.
